Missing: 70,000 Liberals

There seems to be a disconnect between the number of Liberal Party members and the number of donors.

The Tories are still ahead in the donor count:

"Late last week, the parties posted their second-quarter fundraising results. For the first time in several years, the Liberals and the Tories are basically tied – the Harper Tories raised $3.9-million; the Liberals raised $4-million. However, the Tories had 35,217 donors compared with only 19,487 for the Liberals."

But consider the number of members of the LPC:

"Liberal fundraising has improved considerably since Mr. Ignatieff took over as leader last December. Mr. Apps said, too, that membership has increased in six months from 36,000 to 90,000, which makes for a healthier party financially."

What has happened to the 70,000 people who are members of the LPC but were not part of the 19,000 donors?

Or am I missing something?

Seems to me that if each of the 70,000 members donated only $1 a month each (on top of their annual membership fee), the party would be more than $700,000 richer each year?

Make that $5 a month and we are more than $4 million richer each year!
