This is what Michael Byers writes in the August 11 Toronto Star:

"A name change would also ensure that Canada's Democratic party is referred to by its name rather than an increasingly meaningless acronym, creating a brand with immediate substance."

Fat chance.

Very few people are going to use the full words Democratic Party all the time. Most of the time, they will refer to an abbreviated form, such as Tories for Harper's 'new' Conservative Party (the lipstick on that old Reform pig just could not disguise its porcine foundations), or Libs for the Liberal Party.

Up to now people have referred to the NDP (the 'meaningless acronym' Byers refers to), or to Dippers.

So, what can the new Democratic Party do to ensure that people refer to them as Dems rather than something else? They had better come up with something fast, and make it stick.

After all, we all remember the meaningful acronym CRAP.

What could people call this 'new' party?

Well, we could call them the DPs.

Or DeePees.

Or – my choice if the word Dems does not stick – the Deeps.

Jack Layton, chief of the Deeps.

Has a nice ring to it, eh?
