The claim by Harperites that the formation of the Coalition with the support of the Bloc is a ‘coup’ is utter nonsense. It is perfectly legitimate and in accordance with our grand parliamentary traditions that parties form coalitions in order to govern a country.
However, there IS a potential ‘coup’ which could happen as a result of the events set in motion by the formation of the Coalition.
This would happen within the Liberal Party if the Caucus combined with senior officers of the party to usurp the right of the members of the party to select a leader through the convention process in May, and to choose a leader of the party.
The constitution of the party requires the leader to be selected at the convention, by duly selected representatives. Any selection process which avoids the ability of members of the party generally to participate in the selection of a leader to replace Stephane Dion would amount to an illegitimate intra-party ‘coup’, and should be resisted.
Far far better is Bob Rae’s suggestion that if it is possible to arrange, a vote by members of the party be used to select a new leader.
