The issue before the Speaker of our Parliament was a grave one: did the government of the day have the right to withhold any information form the House, or was the right of the House to have access to all information in the possession of the government paramount?
This is a critical issue, as the Speaker acknowledged in his ruling.
The opposition parties and the government have now agreed on a procedure for resolving the issue of certain documents which had only been presented to Parliament in a redacted form.
In my view the opposition parties have not protected our rights as Canadians to have the paramountcy of our elected Parliament acknowledged. Their agreement to the government's proposal to use external arbiters for reviewing certain documents dimishes this principle of the paramountcy of our Parliament.
