For several weeks now we have read about people inside the Liberal Party who believe that it would be better not to defeat the Harper Tories on the confidence vote but rather let the Tories govern during a recession.

For example, consider this article:

“Liberal insiders privately suggest Ignatieff would prefer not to defeat the government over the budget, because he needs more time to rebuild the party and prepare for an election.

Moreover, Liberal strategists see little upside to Ignatieff taking the reins of government at the start of what is promising to be a deep, severe recession. They'd rather let Harper take the blame for the economic pain.”

What exactly does this mean?

That Michael Ignatieff would rather let an inept Tory government govern Canada for the next year or more in order that Harper and his party be blamed for the difficulties which Canada and Canadians will experience in a sharp, deep recession?

That Ignatieff would rather sacrifice hundreds of thousands of jobs for ordinary Canadians in order to avoid being blamed at some time for being prime minister in a time of recession?

If true, what does that indicate about Ignatieff’s real concerns? That he puts his own career above the people?

If the country demands good governance during a recession, then it is Ignatieff’s duty to provide it, and not to slink away and wait for better days.

Right now, Canada has need of leaders, not career politicians.
