Incredibly, just when the opposition parties had the do-nothing Tory government on the ropes, they laid down their tools and quit for the holidays!

“Liberals say since Parliament prorogued last month, they have not had any tactics or strategy meetings, but that next week's national caucus meeting in Ottawa will include a detailed discussion about how to deal with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's (Whitby-Oshawa, Ont.) critical and recession-fighting budget vote at the end of this month as well as subsequent confidence House votes. The Liberals are planning to meet in Ottawa on Jan. 18 and Jan. 19.”

No tactics or strategy meetings, during the period when they should have been preparing to become the next government?

What gives? Are our MPs behaving like fat cats, content to punch the clock and do the least needed to earn their monthly pay?

Where is the urgency, the will for power, the desperate need to do better for Canadians, who are faced with a tsunami coming our way?

But it gets worse …

Apparently, the Liberal caucus has decided to give Harper a get-out-of-jail-free card for the coming budget!

“Parliament is scheduled to return on Jan. 26 and the budget will be tabled the following day. The Liberals officially have been saying that they will make a decision on how to vote once they see the budget and do not rule out the possibility of defeating the government. But the general consensus in Ottawa and among federal political observers across the country is that the Liberals are highly unlikely to vote against the government on the budget vote. However, it's also expected there will be a federal election by the end of 2009.

"They're going to support it. The fix is in on that one pretty well," said a Liberal insider in an interview last week.

Another Liberal source told The Hill Times that they expect a change in the tone and substance of the Tory government when Parliament resumes and therefore will most likely not defeat the government.”

The Cat has some news for our MPs: Canadians expect you to behave in their best interests, and to protect them from the deep recession that is upon us. Not doing your homework, and giving Harper a blank cheque, is not acting in the interests of Canadians.

If the Liberals wish to become the government again, this mode of behavior will not make that happen.

Voters want MPs who think first and foremost of the voters’ interests, and not to have two do-nothing fat cat parties on Parliament hill.
