Apps, one of the Three Musketeers who in 2004 invited Michael Ignatieff to return to Canada to seek a seat as MP and then seek the leadership of the Liberal Party if Paul Martin should resign, now seems intent on bending the rules which he and Ignatieff used to propel Ignatieff into the leadership of the party, so as to destroy any chance that Bob Rae might have of becoming leader of the party.

Apps is quoted as saying, in effect, that sauce for the Ignatieff goose should not be sauce for the Rae gander.

Apps seems to be appropriating to himself the right as President of the LPC to select the next leader of the party, despite the wishes of members of the caucus (not to mention ordinary members of the Liberal Party). He also seems to interpret his duties as President as somehow giving him the right to black ball any member of the party from seeking the leadership, based on any criteria he wishes to adopt.

If this is the way the Liberal Party is going to be renewed, then we better forget about ever rising again. To start off with a President unilaterally giving himself the dictatorial right to decide who can and cannot run for leader, is to doom this party.

If we cannot select a leader in a fair and transparent way, why should voters ever think of voting for this once-proud party?

These tactics smack of a third-rate banana republic, and should not be allowed to succeed.
