During a press conference, the issue of the referendum for independence of Quebec came up, and Jack Layton did a bit of dodging and weaving around the issue.
Finally, he addressed Quebecers directly:
Layton walked a fine line in his speech to the troops, noting that Canadians "from coast to coast" voted for the NDP.But he did not overlook Quebec, either."In this Parliament, we are going to work tirelessly to respond to their expectations," he said. "My message to Quebecers is clear. You can count on me to defend your interests."
