Every time I and others voice concern about what Stephen Harper would do if his 'new' Tory party gained a majority, the rapid response is that Harper has no hidden agenda, that raising this issue is flogging a dead horse, that the Liberals will not gain any traction with such claims.

In short, Harper's defenders say that the leopard has changed its spots, and can now trusted to guard the Canadian flock of sheep.

Some change.

To assess what Harper would do to our democracy we need to consider his actions more than his words.

And his recent actions show that he is intolerant of public debate, dismissive of our parliamentary conventions, and ready to use any means possible to further his agenda.

And his agenda is to change our country.

We should weigh his actions on the long-form census against all his other acts. This is not an isolated incident – it is one of a pattern, one of a trend, one of a consistent right wing intolerant ideology.
