PM Harper’s coup?

The Tories are running around like headless chickens, quoting from their emailed speaking points, and claiming hysterically that the Accord signed by the three opposition parties, and the letter to the Governor General advising that the Tory government does not have the confidence of the House and the Coalition government should replace them, is an attempted, undemocratic coup.

And now they threaten to ask the GG to prorogue the parliament, and allow the minority government (now publicly acknowledged by the majority of MPs in the House to lack the confidence of the House) to govern the country for the next two months. End this session, they seem to be claiming, a scant two weeks after it has started, and without it doing any meaningful work.

Let’s get this straight.

If Harper asks the GG to prorogue parliament instead of holding the confidence vote on December 8, then it is Harper who is attempting a coup – an illegitimate, illegal takeover of the powers of government.

Harper should reconsider any steps to launch such a coup, and accede to parliamentary tradition – that our governments rule only with the confidence of the House.
