The dust slowly settles over the political heart of the great American nation, and dimly through it we can sense the outline of a strategy crafted by a veritable fox of a president.
With one party gripped by the throat by an extreme group, and the other party lead by gutless wonders, brinkmanship became the order of the day for a few brief weeks, as the Tea Party acted in accordance with the wishes of the voters who sent them to the Capitol to wreak havoc on a government determined to spend money for everything that it could.

And the upshot? One view is that the Republicans have crafted a weapon for the Democrats to use in the 2012 contest:

"The first part of this agreement will cut about $1 trillion in spending over the next 10 years.... The result would be the lowest level of annual domestic spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president -- but at a level that still allows us to make job-creating investments in things like education and research," he said.
