Having cut a deal with Peter Mackay, Harper merged his party with the Progressive Conservative Party to create the new Conservative Party. In the next election, the new party did not gain the same percentage of votes as the two merging parties had, as it shed voters to its right and left.
Since then, Harper has steadily lead the Conservative Party to the right on many issues, using it as the Trojan Horse to introduce into Canadian politics many of the values, processes and methods used by the neocon conservative party to the south
