In a dramatic move that will definitely shake up an already boisterous election, veteran broadcaster Don Newman – Canada's Walter Cronkite of the airwaves - has stepped forward with an offer to help Canadians exercise their democratic rights more fully.

Newman today stunned the Harper camp by announcing that he would be proud to act as moderator of a one-on-one televised debate between the Conservative candidate for prime minister, Stephen Harper, and the Liberal contender, Michael Ignatieff.
