Tribal Child

California girl Hailey Clauson shows her versatility as a model in this beguiling editorial shot by Sebastian Kim for Numero issue no. 124. Since her debut at the Spring/Summer 2011 shows where she walked for the likes of Calvin Klein, Gucci, Versace, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton, Clauson has continued to build on that momentum by posing for such industry heavy-weights as Patrick Demarchelier for LOVE Magazine, Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for W Magazine, Terry Tsiolis for V Man, Ellen Von Unwerth for i-D Magazine, and Peter Lindbergh for Numero. Clauson had an equally impressive Spring/Summer 2011 campaign season, appearing in campaigns for Gucci, DSquared2 and Jill Stuart. Clauson's ability to combine wholesome all-American appeal with a sophistication belying her sixteen years of age is her trump card. Having recently switched representation from Marilyn to Next Models, I predict that Clauson will be a major force in the modelling world in the years to come.

Dangerous Moves

Argentinian beauty Dafne Cejas has been on my radar since she emerged on the modelling scene as a worldwide exclusive at the Givenchy Fall/Winter 2010 show. Cejas has an androgynous-like beauty which is disarmingly unconventional and rare. Blessed with high sculpted cheek bones, a low brow, angular features and heavy set eye brows, Cejas' beauty is unique and original. It comes as no surprise then that Cejas' few select editorial appearances have included blue chip publications such as Paris Vogue, V magazine, Vogue Italia, i-D Magazine, LOVE, Numero and Metal Magazine. What I love about Cejas is that her beauty challenges the modelling industry's notions of beauty. Cejas is no cookie cutter beauty, rather the symmetry of her face appears to be mere millimetres away from being deemed by some as non-photogenic, and yet she is an exquisite beauty. At only eighteen years and represented by Ford Models, Cejas is likely to make an indelible impact at the upcoming Spring/Summer collections in September.

Two seasons ago Jamie Bochert caused a frisson of excitement when she opened the Marc Jacobs show: who was that girl?

The New Jersey native had retired from modelling three years previously to concentrate on making music. Heads turned and the Gothic beauty was snapped up for campaigns with Lanvin, Gucci and Marc Jacobs, walking for Ann Demeulemeester, Balenciaga, Celine and Narciso Rodriguez’s autumn/winter 11 shows. Back in 2003, when Jamie first left modelling, a scruffy guy with dyed jet black hair ordered a beer at the bar where she was working. “Fuck bartending,” the guy told her, “you should concentrate on your music.” The two began dating and moved in together. That Christmas Jamie’s new beau surprised her by buying her a piano. “I’d just met Jamie and I didn’t tell her what I did for a living,” says Jamie’s boyfriend, the actor Michael Pitt, over the phone from the couple’s Brooklyn apartment. “She had no clue. Then all of a sudden she saw me dubbing lines in Last Days (Gus Van Sant's tribute to Kurt Cobain). In the scene I was wearing a dress and had blonde hair, she was quite surprised!” When she’s not busy modelling, 32 year old Jamie spends her time writing songs with the view to entering the studio soon with Michael to record them. They are yet to secure a record deal but the buzz surrounding the couple is already strong. Going under the musical moniker of Frances Wolf, Bochert’s songs possess a dark, haunted romance that builds to an emotive crescendo before falling away to an eerie lullaby...

Fabulous Five

i-D Magazine delivers another set of innovative covers for it's Summer 2011 issue featuring a diverse group of models truly worthy of the "Super" tag. Amber Valletta, Behati Prinsloo, Stella Tenant, Kristen MacMenamy and Daphne Groeneveld pose for Craig McDean, Matt Jones, Paolo Roversi, Josh Olins and Dan Jackson respectively sporting the trademark i-D wink. Prinsloo looks uber cool with ghoulish Joker style makeup covering half of her face and ends up bearing a striking resemblance to Elle MacPherson. Valletta works it to full effect with electrifying, neon highlights and a hair style which pays homage to Blondie whilst McMenamy looks positively regal with her now trademark silver grey tresses encased in a crown of thorns. Rounding up the covers are hippie chick Groeneveld and the fashion's perennial favourite Stella Tenant.

Soul Mates

Besties Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss appear on the cover of I-D Magazine's Exhibitionist issue and are the subject of a high glam editorial lensed by Kayt Jones and styled by Edward Enninful. The accompanying feature article chronicles the pair's blossoming friendship from their initial encounter at the Fall/Winter 2008 Prada show to their bonding at a shoot for Top Shop and to their current status as two of the fashion industry's most sought after models.

Dunn and Kloss are birthday twins, sharing the same birth date of August 3rd, with Dunn being two years older than Kloss. The pair refer to one another as Jour Jour and Kar, whilst friends call them both Jourlie. When quizzed as to the best qualities about each other, Kloss says "Jour makes seriously kick-ass fried chicken. It's life changing...And she's the best friend anyone could ask for. I have found my best friend, sister and soul mate by the age of eighteen. I don't know anyone in the world so lucky." Dunn adds that "Karlie is such a beautiful person inside and out. We're more than friends, we're family. Karlie's the sister I never had. It's hard finding someone you can be around and trust with your life and Karlie's that person."

The close bond shared by Dunn and Kloss is evident in the images below, with neither model attempting to overshadow the other. Rather, the pair photograph beautifully together and compliment one another's  individual and distinct beauty. Perhaps Dunn and Kloss herald a return to a model type in the ilk of Naomi, Linda and Christy, who's camaraderie and charisma transcended their visceral beauty.
